I once had a battery explode. Before that, the battery seemed fine. I had
been driving the car for about 30 minutes and turned it off. Less than 5
minutes later, I turned the key and "BOOM".  Parts of the battery and acid
landed all over the engine compartment. What a mess!  Someone later
explained to me it was probably something about the plates shorting out
suddenly.
