I'm going to state the obvious here.
Clean, Clean, Clean.
The right fluid.  Use only fluid, DOT4 for the rubber stuff, to clean and clean.
Easy on the hone.
I'm learning as I go and do here.  With a great deal of help from the list and
from Mark at British Auto in Macedon, NY (blatant plug which will, certainly,
realize me several free bolts).
