  Malcolm,
          A friend of mine who does auto repair recommends a product
called SYL-GLIDE it comes in a tube (a little pricey) but works great
for many things. A must for lubing brake calipers (slides) used for
preventing corrosion (shock bolts,trunnions,etc) also to lube or protect
rubber weatherstrip. It is not petroleum based,so it won't harm rubber.
It maght be worth checking out.
