A number of good responses were received.  However the correct answer is:
        If you look at the shifter extension housing, you'll see that there 
is a guide pin which extends into a groove in the shifter itself.  These 
are on opposite sides depending on whether the transmission is for a 
Spitfire or Midget.  
        So if you want to buy a rebuilt tranny for your Spit or Mid 1500, 
you can buy either one and then just swap the location of the guide pin 
using a suitable drift.
