Hey All, W.S.Thompson and I went off to race at Mosport , just outside of
Toronto, Ontario with fellow Elite owner Tim Covert. Flounder was kind enough
to offer me a tow out there in his new-used 2 car trailer purchased from Yuse
(Bernie Navoral). With the Hounds From Hell in the back of his new Dodge
diesel dually with an added duct taped to the a/c system to keep the Hounds
cool in the bed.we set off Fri. 7:30 p.m. Got about a mile and Flounder
noticed that a trailer fender was sticking out! One of the wheels had
departed. A quick turnaround to Paco (Auto) Zone in Elgin, We bought lug nuts
and installed the spare wheel, listening to that strange combination of Polka
with trumpets that the Pacos listento. We drove thru the night, stopping to
sleep for a few hours in a central MI. hotel lot. Do to the cough from the
SARS I picked up, on the plane going to Houston for my Dad's 80th birthday in
May, Flounder didn't get much sleep. So I took over in the drivers seat around
daylight. WoW , what a sweet tow rig! 75-80 mph and stable as a rock. I told
him this is what we need for the Bonneville effort. The piece of shit Dad (
Richard Kreines) makes us tow out there with is completely unstable. So
Flounder may get a free ride at the salt flats if he is willing to offer up
the tow rig.We reached Mosport around 1:00 p.m on Thursday, enough time to
prep the cars for tech. I had to replace a tire tube and Flounder added a
metal hold down to his battery box, also switching to a smaller battery.I went
through tech no problem with my VSCDA annual, WST's was not signed off for
the year. The first problem on his car raised, blown fuel pump fuse. We worked
that and then his tach wasn't working! This took a lot longer to find the
problem. Redrum ran fine, gridded 7th over all in our group, with no tach! Tim
came over and found that the coil polarity was backwards, sure enough Flounder
switched Redrum to positive ground during the battery change! That explained
everything, it was kicking my ass!I found Mosport is the fastest racing
circuit I have ever seen, at most times in 4th gear with the throttle to the
floor. Flounder really had it down. It is a pure BALLS course, with it's high
speed blind turns.On Sat. Flounders gearbox gave up, poping out of 4th and he
parked the car. I was just beginning to learn the circuit when disaster reared
its ugly head! Tim and I were gridded next to each other for the qualifying
race on Saturday afternoon, 1 lap into the session I was passed by 2 Sprites
of which 1 passed Tim. Entering turn 2, a blind, off camber, down hill , 4th
gear turn, the Sprite in front of Tim spun-out, causing Tim to spin when he
lifted to put on the brakes. I not seeing this event unfolding, as to the
blind entry of the turn, went in following the Sprite in front of me at full
speed. By the time I crested the hill and saw what was happening, I was
committed to the line I was on to keep control of my Elite. Tim's sideways
Elite, at around 80-90 mph missed the Sprite in front of me by a few feet.
Then I came into the picture, hitting him square in the left rear wheel, at
the same speed he was going backwards. Both Tim's and my Elite had to be flat
towed off the circuit, as his rear differential mount was shattered as was my
Elite's nose area. The only good news is that all involved are not hurt, just
a bit sore, with minor scrapes and bruses. So the Elite is destroyed and I am
unsure what is next. I still want to race. Probably turn a page and get my
dream car, Lotus 7 series 1, and I have a good Climax for it. The Hounds could
really give a shit, but their combined breath is no match for a Fast Eddy
fart! They are my new pals, only fell out of the hammok once on top of Mable.
I had to sleep with the Hounds in the trailer. Fast Eddie Haskel
