Sometimes the "show" is unintentional.
My occasional crew member Bob Brown made the trip to WV.
Apparently he had taken off the steering wheel to allow some kids to sit in
the car. Since I never take it off, I didn't think to make sure it was
firmly seated (Think I do now?). There's a left hand sweeper followed by a
right hand sweeper. Flat out, accelerating in 4th gear, in the right hander,
the wheel, unbelieveably, comes off in my hands. Thoughts that occurred to
me in milliseconds were... "Oh fuck! This is gonna hurt! Let's not die
today!"
I dropped the wheel as I shoot straight off the turn toward the tire wall. I
STOMPED on the brakes as I grabbed the dashboard with one hand, turning the
steering shaft with my right. I managed to turn it just enough to hit the
tires with a glancing blow... but still almost flipped the car.
I kept it running, reattached the wheel, and finished the race.
I now can tell you I've had the experience of a sprained sphincter.
