When it comes to power there is no replacement for displacement. Spec
Miata racers have to use restrictor plates in 1.8s.
If you count the increased displacement, larger brakes (good upgrade
for 1.6 cars), chassis bracing, passenger side air bag, and cockpit
brace then yes, the 94 base model weighs 50 pounds more than the
89-93, but all are functional additions that make the extra weight
negligible, IMHO. 50 pounds more and 16 more horsepower.
Either 1.6 or 1.8 are strong enough internally to take a turbo with a
good amount of boost. You just need turbo hardware, injectors, and
engine management.
I've never heard of anyone pulling a 1.8 to put in a 1.6 but I know of
quite a few 1.6 to 1.8 swaps.
