The problems with the Vega aluminum engine wasn't the aluminum
cylinders. They had a high silicon content and were etched so the
silicon (harder than iron) was riding on the rings. The problem with the
early Vega was that GM cheaped out on everything else, including a
marginal cooling system without a recovery bottle. The engines would run
low on coolant, overheat, and blow the headgasket.
Mercedes Benz and Porsche use a similar type sleeveless aluminum block
to this day.
