I was going to say that any list that refers to "rust proofing" and contains
"WD-40" is probably flawed from the beginning. But I haven't heard of any of
the other products so maybe they don't do any rust proofing either. I HAVE
seen informal tests where people would take a batch of nails, coat them with
different products, and stick them in the ground for awhile then come back and
inspect them. Invariably WD-40 is found to be very bad at rust proofing. Of
course it is usually found to be very bad at lubricating also. They do have
the very best PR however because their name is almost synonymous with rust
proofing AND lubrication. There are plenty of products on the market and
available at any decent hardware or automotive store that will far excel at
rust proofing and at lubrication.
I was at a machinist's house one time helping some students do some work on his
Bridgeport mill for a high school project and I noticed 1 gallon cans of WD-40
setting around. Nobody is more set in their ways than an old machinist so I
decided not to get into an argument about the merits or failings of WD-40.
After awhile I saw how it was being used and maybe it works well for that. He
kept a small cup of WD-40 liquid next to the mill and a small brush. He would
dip the brush into the liquid and then apply it to the surfaces about to be
milled, or to the cutters. Maybe it works fine for that use.
I also remember reading a story about a company that manufactured handguns.
The barrels screw into the frames, and at the shoulder at the end of the
threads there is a big stress concentration. Due to their metallurgy and other
factors, they had a problem with stress corrosion leading to fracture, i.e.
some of the barrels were breaking off. They thought this was caused by a
chemical in the WD40 so they stopped using it. I know what stress corrosion is
but it is fairly rare.
