If you think about it, there are only two wires on the Pertronix unit,
Power and Signal. The only way for it to get ground is via that aged
braid, UNLESS you run a third wire and physically ground it.
Electronics tend to have a low tolerance level for iffy grounds.
Please be sure to use a wire that can take all the flexing generated
by the vacuum advance (unless yours is broken or deleted).
