Is that a suppressor or a silencer? It looks like a silencer. A suppressor
is a flash suppressor which is commonly used on a fully automatic weapon to
prevent vision problems (night blindness) when fired in dark conditions. A
flash suppressor does quiet the report somewhat but not to the point where
hearing protection is not needed.

A silencer will quiet the report to the point where hearing protection is
not necessary. But, silencers were outlawed in the Federal Gun Control Act
of 1968. The legal method of owning one is to hold a federal tax stamp for
it. Same as when you have a fully automatic weapon, you have to have the tax
stamp too!
