Without going into a lot of detail, there were basically six types of
fasteners. The BMC codes, and is the prefix in the parts books, show:

<>HCZ U.N.C. Zinc

zinc coated, there was NO need for me to clean them first. The metal
finisher first put them through a mild acid bath to remove all of the
run and crud, then they were coated with a film of protective zinc.
There was no problem with any of the fasteners not fitting after they
were finished. It was all done by the pound, and was ridiculously
inexpensive. Since California has the most restrictive environmental
laws, I would expect that the same services are available in most states.
When folks came out for the BusterCluster, I gave them all a copy of a
small booklet published by BMC that was sent to all dealers May 1, 1964.
"BMC Service Parts Information Bulletin" lists all of the codes for all
types of nut, bolt, screw, etc., as well as the size threads, and
coating (if any). If anyone would like an e-mailed copy, just let me know.
