Yep...

the velocity stacks are helpful and the longer the better for low-end and 
mid-range torque (stock cam profile).

These SU filters in question come with an internal velocity "stack" via a 
nicely shaped "smoothed" entry fabricated as
part of the "back" plate, as do the Hans
Pedersen (H/P) types I've got installed
on my Cooper S spec. 1293.
