I'll have to throw my 2 pence in this conversation. While I am running a
948, it runs great at 4500 rpm when cruising the interstates. I also get
better gas milage at 4500 than at 4000. I've been doing this for the last 5
years on the same engine without any problems. Granted only about a third of
my total milage has been at this rpm but that probably equates to 4 - 5000
miles total at 4500+ rpm and at periods of tank full to tank full (i.e.,
hours at a time). With the 948 and a 40 DCOE Weber I get 38 mpg cruising at
4500 rpm. At less rpm the milage can drop to as low as 28 mpg (3500 - 4000).
