Assuming similar tire construction, then I believe the contact patch should be 
the same size, just a different shape.

        and now for another brain teaser .....

        assuming that the tires are to be filled to the exact same
        tire pressure, which puts more rubber on the road, a tall
        skinny tire, (like a 165/80/13) or a short fat tire, (like a
        205/50/15)?  of course on the same car.
