IMHO, GM et al figured that by abandoning the standards they could eliminate thrid-party car stereo sales and make more money by selling a $100 OEM stereo for $300 under the assumption that Sony and Pioneer and so forth would just abandon the market. For some reason public reaction never seems to do what the Big Three think they should. Just as well, I guess. At any rate, processor-controlled stereos allow the designer to do anything they want to screw up the user interface, so they do. </rant> David Lieb |
