Same thing happens on my '02 xterra, I understand a pressurized
emissions system but a check engine light? How general a code could you
use? What do I know.

I take it to the dealer and he tells me, the gas cap was loose, and
that causes a problem with the emission system, that triggers the "check
engine" light. I suppose what we really need is a gas cap ajar
light...or or or hell if I know.
