You guys shoulda told me that machine shop work wasn't so expensive. (
famous last words? ) I called a local recommended shop and got some
ballparks on the head work. And then I inquired what it would cost to have
the block decked, ( if it turned out that I needed it ) and then I mentioned
that the head was off, but that was it. Really not so bad. The price to
disassemble and prep for decking is worth the the price just to have it
cleaned. Now, maybe I'm being taken to the cleaners, as I am very ignorant
of competitive prices, but the initial impression was good.
But, then I came home, and uncovered the engine, and looked a bit more
closely at it, and remembered that there are some parts that will be
required. I need a water pump because the inlet is badly corroded and the
bypass from the head is corroded badly also. By corroded, I mean you can
see through where parts used to be. Then I looked in at the sleeved
cylinder walls and they feel like they get smaller at the top. I'm kinda
hoping not to be going larger. It's currently a 1293. Fingers crossed.
Is that bypass tube a special part, or something that a machine shop should
have around?
The temptation is to swap out the cam while I'm there, since Vizard says my
731 "doesn't produce results in a 1275". Any recommendations for street?
What all do I get into if swapping cams ( parts wise ) ?
Does anyone have pictures of a '67 thin flange painted up as it should be?
( Or do you just take off the fan, and dip the whole thing in green paint?
: ) )
Also, what's the best way to protect the engine id plate. Remove it? If
so, are those pins available to re-attach it?
Aluminum water pumps . . . where?
This shop is supposed to be good, but is there anything particular to our
engines that I should be aware of, to pass on instructions about ?
Warm sunny day today. But we need some rain to get the spridget repellant
( salt ) off the roads.
