Just completed an 1100 mile trip here back in Dec. First of all, Yes,
U-haul will not rent you a trailer for a Midget/Sprite. they will rent you
a two wheel dolly, but only the ones that have the swivel front. From what
I understand, the spacing on the non-swivel front is to wide.
On the Swivel front, the front tires just hug the inside of the wheel well
on the dolly. I had no problem towing the midget. Yes, remove the
driveshaft. And a word of warning -DON'T BACKUP. Remember the dolly
swivels - if you backup more than 6 inches and are not extremely carefull
and extremely straight, it will swivel into the door. Just caught it in
time.
Oh Ya - Make sure the rear tires are in good shape. I took mine off my 76
and put them on the 73 for the trip. The tires that were on there were all
cracked and won't have made it.
By the way, never tried it, but they say that the midget will fit on the
trailer with the wheels hugging the inside of the rails. BUT DO NOT tell
U-haul it is for a midget - I tried that. Tell them it is for an MGB. The
MGB is listed in their books.
