This whole argument is hilarious, and perhaps the one
constant of human perception - years ago when I was a
kid, my parents thought Springsteen blasting out of my
room was going to kill me, before that I'm sure many
adults thought Woodstock signaled the end of
civilization, John Lennon was polluting our minds,
Elvis was obscene, and bobby socks and Chuck Berry
were the last nails in the coffin of morality (my
father used to say that engineers spent years trying
to take the distortion out of recordings, and rock and
roll put it right back in). Corporations and
politicians cheating - wow, that's new. Carnegie,
Pullman, LBJ, McCarthy, those were some swell guys,
and Henry Ford was a real sweatheart (his innovation
was not so much in assembly line production, but in
selecting and paying a workforce so that they were
ideally suited to buy the cars they were building,
creating a nice inbred market). Dow chemical, the
Love Canal, 3 mile Island, remember when the Hudson
was completely dead from corporate dumping? and the
M*fia came to power in NY in the early 20's because of
the abuse people like my grandparents took in the
sweatshops when they were 12 years old. The more
things change...
