I think what you are talking about is Hide food, the
British car magazines use it all the time.  I got mine
at the local Jaguar dealer for less than $10.  Online
it was $15 or more.

        Robert's idea is a good one, IMHO.
        
        I suggest that you visit a "tack" shop (where they sell horseback riding
        supplies) or leather shop and see what they suggest.  Neatsfoot oil is 
used
        to condition leather saddles, bridles, etc., and is likely a very good
        solution.  I've seen it used successfully to refurbish very dried out
        saddles and other things that had small cracks in them.
