Bill,
turn up the throttle stop screws on the SU carbs a little.
If the butterfly valve close fully , the engine builds up a vacuum
behind the valve on tickover, and makes that first movement of the
butterfly quite "sticky" - so a gentle increase in revs is almost
impossible to achieve.
