Mike and List,
Maybe there is some confusion about which gasket I am talking about
that was leaking. It was NOT the rubber ring that fits into the head of
the canister. The offending gaskets (plural) were the two round 2 inch
paper gaskets that have the three holes. These gaskets are positioned
between the adapter piece that is bolted to the side of the block and
between that adapter piece and the canister head. To get a t the
starter I had removed the oil filter to get at the starter by removing
the two bolts on the block and separating the entire oil filter
assembly.
In my last post I said I had taken this entire assembly off to get
at the starter and I thought I had not changed the old paper gaskets for
new ones. After fixing this leak, I don't think that is the case. Last
night when I removed the WHOLE filter assembly from the block, the
gasket separated into several pieces. I just had to have put a new
gasket in when I did this before. So now the question is why did the
gasket fail. Was it the gasket material? Was it the Aviation Gasket
Cement I'm using? I bought gasket material from Pep Boys last night
that is made from a rubber/fiber material and is 1/32 inch thick. Maybe
coupled with the Aviation Gasket Cement the rubber/fiber material will
compress and form a better seal than the paper one that failed in only a
few hundred miles. Seems I always learn something from this car.
