Bill,
Do you have a fuel pressure regulator? 4-5 PSI is kind of high. Stock SU
fuel pump is 2.5 to 3 PSI. This could cuase your floats to overfill,
raising the fuel level to high in the jets. causing spillage into the
throats. Also check that your float needle close and seat properly. Lack of
a heat shield could be a problem, but not when the engine is cold obviously.
