First thanks for all the recommendations.
I did NOT have to cut the tunnel, nor pull the transmission.
Thank (insert your prefered religous person here) It was just a stuck
reverse selector locating pin. A squirt of PB Blastor and a tap with a
screw driver set it free. Being stuck in the reverse position made the
shifter very sloppy since it thought it was going into reverse all the
time.
I did examine 2 othere trannys and watched to see what happened when
shifted.
Once I saw the reverse pin move up on the other trans, I checked the pin
on the 67. It didn't move because it was already in the up position.
So know I know the Sprite was sitting in reverse for 27 years.
Oh and the tooth like part that came out in the oil was the shifter anti
rattle plunger. It must have gone around a gear and got smashed and
deformed. Upon carfull examination, I noticed it was brass but shaped
like a gear tooth due to it's travels around the other gears.
Sometimes you get lucky :)
