Have done this a number of times with no lasting effect except
that the battery discharges quickly.
With a 1955 Jawa and a 59 XK150, recharged and reinstalled the
battery. More recently, working in the dark, hooked up a 76 Honda
360 (solid state charging, alternator) backwards, fried a wire
non Lucas smoke) for about a minute and after corrections the
bike charged better than ever.
