Frank,
You may have hit the nail on the head with you concern about the
1.75" SU. Possibly one way of fooling it into thinking it's working
is to center a ceramic cube heater under the front bumper and point
it back towards the engine compartment. This not only warms the oil
and block, but also the carb and float bowls, allowing the inadequate
choke to become adequate. The other suggestions about going to an
electronic ignition and more powerful coil may also work, because as
you know, the spark plug gap can be opened quite a bit and thus
hopefully be able to burn the lees-than-perfect mixture. Maybe. I
recall that you had a failure with a Pertronix Ignitor. This may have
been due to turning the engine over, like during a tune-up, with some
or all of the wires to the the coil and distributor still connected.
In one of their troublshooting lists, Pertronix basically says 'don't
do this'. Not prominently displayed.
Gotta go!
