For those who care: The Garrett (Garrett became AiResearch, which became
AlliedSignal) T3 is a good machine, with gas engine reliability of around
100K miles assuming the manufacturer has provided a decent oiling system. On
turbodiesels like the Mercedes, the T3's have gotten over 300,000 (yes I
typed that right) miles (cooler exhaust gas). This is one of the most common
turbochargers in the world, and I recently spoke with a large truck refurb
house that pays only $300 for a rebuild (I was quoted $700 when I had my
Lotus Esprit; the shop looked at it and deemed it fine and not in need of
rebuild).
