If you can get hold of a doctor's stethescope it is amazing how well you can pin-point the source of noises of this sort. If not, try "listening" with a metal rod to various (static) parts of the engine, with the near end of the rod against the boney bit behind your ear. ---- on second thoughts you did say the noise is made only on over-run so this method could become quite exciting-----!!
