Go to: http://www.scca.org/index.html for lots of information. There is road racing, Solo I (controlled road racing), Solo II (auotcross), rallying and more. Best entry level for someone new wanting to drive their own car is the Solo II activity. There are links to local SCCA clubs, as well as definitions and rules posted.
