Mike,

I would say that $5000 is a bit steep even if the car is really clean.  If
it's perfect right down to the paint, you might want to pay that much, but
probably only if the alternative was to buy a less-clean car and pay
someone to restore it.  If you are a handyman, you can probably buy a nice
car of this type for $1000 to $1500 and restore it yourself with a total
cost of less than this guy is asking.

Before you buy, check for body rust and that the motor turns freely.  After
you buy, replace all fluids, filters, and brake/clutch rubber parts.  Start
the car after oiling the tops of the pistons, filling the oil filter with
oil, and priming the oil pump if you can.

Oh yes, clean the rats out of the trunk, and the birds nest out of the
carb.
