This thread reminded me of an episode of This Old House or some such thing
where they visited a factory in San Francisco that specialized in
reproduction hardware -- door knobs, hinges, etc.  They also went through
the steps and even included comments about the shrinkage and how they
compensated  for it.  Their end result was a beautiful duplicate of the
antique original in size, shape, and pattern.  Of course, they only wanted
$150 or so for each door knob.
