I race an 1147cc car , I cool it with an off the shelf Rabbit diesel radiator
, I use the one without a cap and a surge tank up on the firewall where I
fill the system. The heater hose port from the rear of the head goes into
this tank and the other line from th tank goes to the back of the water pump.
The engine does not run hot like this , I use a 1500 water pump with a stock
pulley etc... The 1500 pump makes it easier to line up the pulley with my
fluid type harmonic balancer and the pulley is the lightest one of the pumps.
No thermostat or restrictor but the pulley on my damper has a 3" OD , it is
as small as will fit since the crank nut is so large.
The engine is 14.5 to 1 compression , Carillo rods,it's Rick Cline Sr's
engine package , actually it is his engine , I have sort of a "factory" type
deal . I usually shift at 8000 to 8500 , and it will turn to 9000 if I get
caught between gears like the keyhole and carousel at Mid-Ohio. I will fix
this with a racing gearbox before the Runoffs.
The car is strong and reliable , with a 3.89 rear gear and our 20X8 tires it
will turn 8500 to 8700 at Daytona if I get a draft out of the chicane.
Rick's engine is dead reliable , I've had 2 mechanical dnf's in two years ,
one from an off brand head gasket, and I had a pushrod tip problem last year
at the runoffs , when I got back from there I found 2 more cracked pushrod
tips . My fault for not replacing them all when I had one break.
I'll be happy to tell you anything that I can that might help you out.
Kevin
PS ;
Rick gets substantially less than 20k for an engine!!!!!
