I got around to this "shop problem" perhaps two or three years ago... I
went with the small plastic parts bins that you can buy from Lowes, etc.
They're fairly cheap overall.
Then I spent the next two or three evenings on my floor in the living room
sorting out nuts & bolts. :-) In the end, I've got a whole bunch of
these bins that live in a shelf I made for that purpose, each bin
dedicated to a particular size of nuts/bolts, along with some specials,
some bins for bushings, etc. etc. etc. I used the standard "fishing
tackle box" style clear plastic boxes w/compartments for very small
fasteners / washers.
It was a pain to do (and I threatened bodily harm to anyone that dropped a
bin when we moved 1.5 years ago... :-), but I've found it well worth it.
Now I can quickly find bolts/nuts and (as importantly) quickly find out I
_don't_ have something and need to buy it as well.
