that was my first thought, but the symptoms don't match the
description in the one-page "owners manual" for the need for
battery replacement (the manual claims that the display will
be dim when it's time to replace the batteries, and the display
is as crisp and readable as it ever was.)

on the other hand, the CR2032 is a rather common battery, so
i guess it wouldn't hurt to buy a couple and see if it starts
working right.
