Gary, I would recommend buying a gallon of Kroil and setting up a little
"soak tub". Immerse a few tools in it for a day or so. Set up a table
grinder with a soft wire wheel and after soaking, clean them up on the
wire wheel. I have no financial interest in Kroil (wish I did) but it is
simply the best penetrant and rust remover I have ever used. You can
order it over the phone. Here's their address and phone #

Subject: Cleaning old tools
Spent the day cleaning out Grandpas old barn. We found a cache of old
tools, planes, drill bits, files, saws, hammers etc. etc etc. Lots of
great old tools ranging in age from twenty years old to a hundred or
more.
They all have a rusty patina (and in some cases a thick coating of rust)
from being stored in wood boxes in a barn with no heat. They are also
quite dirty.
Any thoughts on cleaning these pieces to prepare them for sale or
personal use?
Thanks
Gary K.
