Mark, the 305 is a good motor for a lot of applications, if the camaro had
the 4 Bbl carb on it then there is a possibility that you have the H.O.
verson of the 305, what that means is that it has 1.84 intake valves in
stead of 1.73. if you are planning to rebuild the engine then you will
easily see the difference between a 305 and the 350, the 305 has a 3.37 in
bore and the 350 has a 4.00 in bore, they share the same crank i.e. stroke.
I have a 305 block in the back yard that I am going to use in my 58 Chevy
stepside. Bolt it to a 700r4 and I should realize an engine strong enough to
pull the truck at freeway speeds and still get decient gas mileage. To
identify the engine before you tear it down the engine number is on a land
on the foreward lip of the cylinder head deck on the right side, it can be
read without removing the head. There is realy no reason why you can't use
the 305 in your truck, the exterior of the 305 is the same as the 350 so all
of the dress-up goodies for the 350 will fit the 305, and there is no
difference in the mounting of the two engine sizes.
