Hey Ed,
the best thing I've found to work is good old elbow grease and a good SHARP 
putty
knife. It seems to work best with the edge on one side only. Use the side 
without
the bevel toward the metal at about a 30-45 degree angle. plan on building up
some good arm muscles.
