I fitted an MGB rack to my '51 +4 and it was hopeless. The turning circle was
so great I had to do three-point turns on a "round-a-bout" (is this an
Australian term? - I think they are called a "circus" in England?). The
turning circle was worse than an old Land Rover!
The MGB steering rack "throw" (the distance the rack travelled from one extent
to the other) was approximately 100mm. My +4 requires 150mm throw to get a
decent turning circle.
The car also suffered, just slightly, from "bump-steer" as the MGB rack
steering arms are relatively short.
My next choice was an Alfa 33 rack, 150mm travel and approximately 2.8 turns
lock to lock. The +4 now has a tight turning radius and the "long" steering
arms are pivoted from the centre of the rack - thus no noticeable bump steer.
The Alfa rack fits neatly and works very nicely.
