Hi All,
Had an interesting day continuing to take Irene's front end apart,
highlighted by a trip to our local machine shop for the "Bushing Thing".
Radiator's out, things freed up, still trying to figure out if there's a way
to remove the main front member without taking the wings and engine out....
The trip to NAPA was a wonderful education....never just send stuff off,
always go to watch....after two runs in the automatic parts washer (can I
have one, please?), the spindles were judged clean enough to work with (after
thirty years of marriage the bride and groom can almost fit in their
honeymoon clothes again)....then off to the press. After a brief effort,
drifting was judged to be a waste of time. Sleeves and pushers were tested
for fit, and then two tons of brute force pressure eased those bushes out
like butter on a hot knife! Chamfer the ends of the spindles, and in go the
new bushes nice as you please. Next comes the honing..."reaming is using one
to six blades....honing is like an infinite number of blades"...quite a good
fit already, but need to get alignment right...soon delivered assembled
spindles/bushings/kingpins...."Be sure to wash eveything off thoroughly with
mineral spirits to get rid of the honing grit"...smooth and tight as....
I saved the old bushes so that we can put in O rings...total cost for the
machine shop $42....Best of all, as Fred says, I know my Morgan much better
through doing it myself
