For my two bits I would recomend a conventional two post lift like you
see in a service station.
I have one of these in my shop. The have a number of uses from a car lift
to an engine cherry picker. I even have a roll around pallet about 8 inches
high that I can hook over two of the lift armes and lift it to bench height.
This works well for engine work (excellent for motorcycle work as you can
roll it onto the bench and raise it to work level), I store this under
another conventional bench against the wall.
Occasionally the lift is used for the purpose you posted about, to store
an extra car up out of the way. But the other uses far exceed this one.
You will need about 15 feet of ceiling space for a large car. These lifts
cost about $2000 to $3000US used.
