Thanks to all respondents to this problem. I hope to get to the shop again tomorrow to try the suggestions, and also to check the timing using 12V from the fuse box or starter. I'm going to try to temporarily fill the space left between the ends of the throttle bushes and throttle plates with something to see if it makes the idle drop. If that is the cause, I'll then try to fill them with something more permanent. Can I use epoxy, or is it gas soluble? Liquid metal?
