One of the earliest functions of the AA was to warn motorists of speed traps (yes, even in the 20's and 30's). As it was (and still is) illegal to warn other road users that they are approaching a speed trap, the patrols used the device of looking at the member (to show that they had seen them) and NOT saluting. There are usually dozens of badges for sale at the Classic Car show here in Birmingham, UK, in a couple of weeks. PaulH. |
