You should only have to back off the adjusters if your drums have worn
and the shoes are sitting in a groove. After several years of
struggling on several different cars I seem to have hit on the solution
(for the two I currently own). Put a large screwdriver between the drum
and backplate and lever it backwards. You will probably find that the
backplate moves backwards and the drum stays just where it is. With the
tension still on, tap on the end of the axle shaft with a small/medium
hammer, and I mean tap, I don't get anywhere near knocking it off the
axle stands. The drum should move a bit, now apply leverage to the
other side and tap again, apply to other side and tap again ...
