Thanks for all the earlier advice on removing the PA gearbox from inside the
car. No problem getting the box out. It is now on the floor. You may
remember, last year, I asked for some help as I thought I had a loose
flywheel, there was a lot of clanging in the flywheel/clutch area when the
starter was operated. Now that the box is out I found 5 pieces of aluminum
shrapnel, about 1/8" thick, approx 1/2" x 3/4" in size. One piece has a
brass rivet in it. There are markings on the ring gear where it has been
rubbing on something and I suspect the shrapnel was in the bottom of the
bell housing and being hit by the ring gear. Now to today's five questions
before I go further:

1-any idea where this aluminum shrapnel originated? nothing obvious so far.

2-the gearbox needs a rebuild as it was noisy and the rear bearing allows
the output shaft to wiggle and move in and out 1/8". I have read the gearbox
sections in the PA/PB Instruction Manual, Malcolm Green's book, M.G. Road
Cars, vol.1. Four Cylinder cars, and G. Howell's book A Practical Guide to
The Restoration of the "J" type. All seem to have a different take on how to
strip the PA gearbox. I'm confused. So now the question is, who do I listen
to or how do I strip the box? I have rebuilt MGA boxes, TD/TF boxes, TC
boxes and one TA box, never a MMM box.

3-where is the best place to get PA gearbox parts, assuming they are
available.

4-anybody have a spare PA or preferably PB gearbox? I do have a spare PA
bell housing.

5-Oh horrors, as a last resort, anybody fitted a different gearbox, maybe 5
speed overdrive? I already have a spare bell housing so might not be too
difficult.

Thanks for any and all help, PA-0531 NEEDs it.
