Hi Ed (and others),

I decided to commence my rolling restoration of the N type's drive train, so
I pulled out the differential. I know that it wasn't the most urgent problem
but at least I had the parts (the plan was to convert to an 8/39 from the
8/43 I had in it). I was rather surprised to find that the diff had been
assembled wrong and that the carrier bearings were about to collapse. As a
consequence, the pinion is ruined ( although the crownwheel is OK). The diff
wasn't even making any noise!

Must have been just about to explode!

Makes one think!

We have put in the conversion to tapered rollers (to the pinion avoids the
need for a split inner race ball bearing), the bearings went in without any
machining, but the hardened washer for under the pinion was missing. don't
suppose you would have a spare?

(PS if anyone on the list would like a copy of the technical drawings for
this conversion let me know)
Andrew
