This is what it sounds like - many years ago my Connaoght was my only car
through a winter - cycle wings - no sidescreens etc - minimal engine
protection --.
I'd get two miles on a cold morning and pull into a convienent lay-by to
let the enging heat work through for a couple minutes - and heat the SU
carb barrels to stop them clogging with ice!
If you have fibre blocks between the manifold and the carb - removing them
can aid heat transfer to the carb - but might need reinstalling for the
summer months.
