Twelve years ago my then six year daughter was sitting in my stone stock 1912
Model T Ford. "Dad I can touch the pedals!" she said. "Ok, you are old enough
to diive!" I said. Cranked it up, and backed it out of the drive and pointed
it twords Grandmas. I don't know how many people on the list know how to
drive a T with a planitary transmission, but all the shifting is done with
the three pedals on the floor. Off we went in low gear all the way, the high
gear was locked out for safety. That week she told her teacher about her
adventure and I was asked to bring the T in for "show and tell". I gave a
short history talk and ended with the statement that T's had to be easy to
drive since they were the first cars most people had back then. To
demonstrate this I cranked it up and my daughter and I drove around the
parking lot. When we got back she got out and I gave everyone in the class a
ride. That nite at dinner I found out that the boys up the street were saying
things about my daughter not being able to ride a bike without training
wheels. They were quiet now, she could DRIVE ! The bike lost the training
wheels within a week.
