Bob, yes they actually do have a "braided" cloth insulation sleeve over the
braided copper wire originally.  I think the material is cotton.
I would try using shoe laces. You may have to buy a few types to get what
you want but I found a tubular type of lace which has an inner tube
component on Amazon which is just about perfect for the job.
