The leak as originally reported was between the engine and transmission and
out of the hole in the bellhousing where the cotter pin lives.
I don't see how a failure of the filter seal would lead to oil's migrating
to the rear of the engine/transmission joint.
I'm sticking with something that either broke or was displaced at the rear
of the crank which is allowing the oil to get past it.
